When planning a trip to Kenya, it's important to ensure you're protected against potential health risks. The CDC and WHO recommend several vaccinations for travelers to Kenya.
First, make sure your routine vaccinations are up to date. This includes vaccines for measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (DTaP), chickenpox (varicella), polio, and your annual flu shot.
Additionally, consider the following vaccines:
Hepatitis A: Recommended due to the risk of contracting the virus through contaminated food or water, no matter where you are staying.
Hepatitis B: Advised if you might have sexual contact with new partners, or need medical procedures, as the virus can be spread through bodily fluids.
Typhoid: Especially important if you’re visiting smaller cities, rural areas, or if you’re an adventurous eater.
Yellow Fever: This vaccine is required if you are traveling from a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission and is also recommended due to the presence of the disease in Kenya.
Rabies: Advised for those who might be in close contact with animals, especially if your travel plans include outdoor activities like hiking or cycling.
For malaria prevention, there's no vaccine, but taking preventive medications is crucial. Consult with your healthcare provider for the best antimalarial medication for your trip.
